The loveliest seasons are spring (April–June) and early autumn (September–October). Winter — misty and hushed, magical at Carnival and Christmas — has its own romance.

Is a gondola proposal too cliché?
It’s a classic for a reason — but the execution decides everything. A rushed shared ride at noon is a tourist queue; a briefed gondolier on a quiet-canal route at golden hour, with a photographer hidden on a bridge and a serenade waiting, is cinema. The cliché is in the timing, not the boat.
Do gondola proposals happen outside Venice?
A few cities offer gondola-style rides, but the real thing — licensed gondoliers, lacquered boats, canal architecture — exists only in Venice. If you’re set on the gondola, plan Venice; if you’re set on water, a private boat on Lake Como or off Positano delivers equal romance.
